Our Story
Ours begins with the founding of Sicels in Copenhagen in late 2019 by Mariapia Mineo, a graduate of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts with an MA in Fashion Design. The brand draws its name from one of the ancient populations of Sicily, the Sicels (from the Greek "Sikeloi"), reflecting Mariapia’s heritage and deep connection to the island. Our mission is to create timeless, season-less accessories that capture the vibrant patterns and colors of the Mediterranean, reimagined with a modern and minimalist touch.
Who We Are
Mariapia Mineo, the founder and driving force behind Sicels, is dedicated to crafting high-quality, enduring products. Based in Copenhagen, Mariapia combines her extensive background in fashion design with a passion for sustainable and thoughtful craftsmanship. Sicels is a one-woman business that produces limited edition accessories free from the constraints of traditional fashion seasons, aiming to transcend trends and create pieces that last a lifetime.
Conscious Manufacturing
At Sicels, we are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint and prioritizing sustainability in every aspect of our production process.
Our scarves are ethically crafted in Como, Italy and England, utilizing natural and sustainable textiles sourced from premium family-run studios. We work closely with print studios that employ innovative technologies to reduce water usage and recycle excess dyes during the printing process. All dyes are water-soluble, and we only use natural products for fabric preparation and coating.
By producing all our scarves in limited editions, we avoid overproduction and encourage conscious purchasing. This approach ensures that each piece is made with care and precision, contributing to a more sustainable future.
The Designs
Our design philosophy is rooted in a love for Mediterranean culture and aesthetics, which we reinterpret through a modern, minimalistic lens. Each print and pattern is inspired by the rich history and vibrant colors of the Mediterranean, yet is crafted to fit seamlessly into contemporary wardrobes. We believe in the beauty of timeless design, and our accessories reflect this ethos.
Our Fabrics
We are dedicated to using only the finest, sustainable materials in our products. Our scarves are made from luxurious fabrics such as classic Silk twill and Crepe de Chine, as well as more eco-friendly alternatives like Organic Peace silk, Merino virgin wool, Cotton voile, and Ecovero Viscose.
Our upcoming collection will introduce scarves made from Recycled "Spun" silk and GOTS certified silks, showcasing our ongoing commitment to gradually reducing the use of conventional silk in favor of more sustainable options. Our goal is to inspire sustainable consumption by offering products that are meant to last a lifetime with proper care.
The Packaging
Every Sicels accessory is packaged with care in a premium, environmentally-friendly box made in Europe. Our packaging is crafted from 100% recycled, FSC-certified paperboard, ensuring that your purchase arrives safely while minimizing environmental impact. The scarves are carefully folded between acid-free tissue paper.
The Jewellery
Our jewellery capsule collection embodies the essence of Sicels, designed both in Sicily and Denmark and hand-crafted to order in our Copenhagen studio. Each piece reflects the timeless elegance and intricate beauty of Mediterranean culture, brought to life through thoughtful design and meticulous craftsmanship.
